The real saving on an Ancestry membership is the distance between the introductory term and the rate it renews at, and the Renewal and Cancellation Terms say as much: the price agreed at purchase holds for the period bought, while new prices may apply to renewals. That puts almost all of the money into two decisions. Which term to start on, and what to do on the day it comes up again.

The Ancestry list in September 2026, and what each card is measured against

Checked in September 2026. At the end of that month, Ancestry's DNA page listed the kit at $99 and paired it with three months of World Explorer for $100. The extra dollar pays for the first three months of membership, and the footnote under the package sets the terms after that: a renewal every three months at $99.95 until the subscription is canceled.

For the membership cards the yardstick is what the whole term costs. Ancestry's gift pages sell all three tiers in six-month and twelve-month blocks, so a percentage off one block and a dollar amount off another come off different totals. For the kit cards it is the kit price, which on the DNA page leaves shipping out.

Three questions to settle before paying

The kit on its own, or the kit with three months of World Explorer? The package, if a membership was on the list anyway. It adds three months of World Explorer for a dollar more than the kit alone, and the DNA page lists DNA by Parent and Traits among what a membership adds to a kit. Its footnote carries the rest: the subscription then renews automatically every three months at the rate printed there, and the package is closed to anyone who has already redeemed a one-dollar subscription offer.

Start with the free trial, or pay for the first term? Taking the trial gives up a safety net. The Renewal and Cancellation Terms keep a cancel-for-refund option in the first fourteen days of a first subscription longer than a month, provided it did not start with a free or paid trial, so the free days cost that option, and they come with a cancellation deadline two days before the trial ends.

And if a subscription is already running? Then the package prices stay out of reach until it ends, because their footnotes exclude the renewal of a current subscription. The practical consequence is that a tier is worth choosing on the renewal price rather than on the opening one. An introductory figure lasts only as long as its offer says; the tier is what the account sits on from then on, and moving between tiers partway through a term can carry its own cost, described in the questions at the foot of this page.

The free trial, and the day the decision is due

Ancestry advertises a fourteen-day free trial on its membership pages, and it is a free trial rather than a discounted first month. The limits sit in the Renewal and Cancellation Terms, and there are two of them worth knowing before the trial is started rather than after.

The first is a quota. Those terms state that a user is eligible for one free and one paid trial, which makes the trial a one-time move rather than a habit. Anyone planning to look around, stop, and come back later on a second free run will find that route closed.

The second is a deadline that lands early. The terms allow a trial to be canceled at any time prior to two days before the trial period ends, with no further charge.^[2] Miss it and the subscription begins the moment the trial runs out. Two days before the end is therefore the real date to write down, not the last day of the trial itself.

There is one trade worth weighing against all that. A first subscription term paid upfront normally carries a fourteen-day cancel-for-full-refund option, but the terms attach it only to a subscription that did not begin with a free or paid trial. The trial and that refund window are alternatives, so the choice is between trying the service for nothing and keeping the right to change your mind after paying.

Putting a code on an Ancestry order

Sequence decides more here than typing does. Whether an Ancestry discount lands is mostly settled before the field is ever reached, by what sits in the cart and by the account's own history with Ancestry.

1. Pick the product first. A membership and a testing kit are separate purchases with separate rules, and Ancestry opens each from its own page: the kit pages sell the kit outright, the membership pages lead in with the free trial, and the header keeps a "Cart" entry holding whatever has been collected so far.
2. Add everything before opening checkout. Where a kit and a membership are being bought together, Ancestry's bundle page adds the kit and then offers the membership on top, so the pairing is made in the cart rather than typed in later.
3. One code goes into the discount field at checkout.
4. Then check the running total. A discount that has landed changes that number, and the number is what counts.
5. Pay only once the total looks right.

Anything bought as a bundle deserves a second look at the footnote under the price. Ancestry hangs the conditions of a package offer in that small print, and the package offers on its kit pages state plainly that they are available only with a kit purchase.

When an Ancestry offer will not attach

A subscription is still running on the account. Ancestry repeats the rule under offer after offer: introductory and package offers are for new and returning subscribers, and not for the renewal of a current subscription.^[3] A member partway through a term is not the case those offers describe, however new the code is.

The offer is tied to a purchase that is missing. The bundled introductory membership Ancestry sells alongside a kit carries the line that the offer is available only with a kit purchase, and the same footnote limits that bundled subscription to one per user. Without the kit in the cart there is nothing for it to attach to.

The trial quota is spent. Since the Renewal and Cancellation Terms allow one free and one paid trial per user, a trial link followed by an account that has already used both will not open a third.

The card carries its own terms, and they win. Ancestry's Terms and Conditions say that additional terms may apply when taking advantage of a promotion or special offer, and that where those additional terms conflict with the general ones, the additional terms prevail.^[4] The small print under a specific offer is therefore not decoration; it is the contract for that offer.

Buying a kit: what the price leaves out, and what comes back

Each kit price on Ancestry's DNA page carries a footnote, and it is worth reading before comparing two figures: the price excludes shipping. The return leg, by contrast, is already paid for. Ancestry describes the kit as arriving with full instructions, a saliva collection tube and a prepaid return mailer, so sending the sample back adds nothing to the bill.

Timing. Ancestry says results are ready in most cases within six weeks of the sample reaching the lab, and adds its own caution that processing times may be longer when demand is high. That gap between order and result is why a kit bought as a present needs more lead time than the delivery estimate suggests.

Changing your mind. For kits bought in the United States, the Renewal and Cancellation Terms make a refund conditional on two things happening together: the request and the return of the kit, both within sixty days of the order being placed, with a fifteen-dollar processing fee deducted.^[2] Shipping and processing charges do not come back. For a kit bought through one of the outside sellers those terms name, the refund request goes to that seller directly.

Traits have their own deadline. Traits bought for a test whose results are already available cannot be refunded, according to the same terms. Bought before the results appear, they can be canceled up until the results arrive. It is a narrow window, and it closes by itself.

Pausing a membership instead of canceling it

A lever that is easy to miss lives in the Renewal and Cancellation Terms. Where it is available, a renewing subscription can be paused by delaying the renewal payment by up to two months at the end of the current billing cycle.^[2] The pause can be used once per cycle, its length cannot be changed once it starts, and access to paid content stops for the duration.

What makes it useful is the price on the other side. The terms say the subscription reactivates automatically after the pause at the price it would have renewed at beforehand, so pausing buys time without surrendering the rate. And a subscription canceled while it is paused is not charged at all.

If canceling is the decision. Cancellation runs through Account Settings or through Ancestry's own support, and the deadline sits before the renewal date rather than on it: two business days ahead of it for a monthly subscription, which keeps access to the end of the paid period without a refund. After a subscription has renewed, the terms rule out a refund on canceling it, and the same applies to anyone who has subscribed before.

A charge worth planning around. A longer subscription billed month by month is still a commitment to the whole term, and leaving it early can attract a cancellation fee. For purchases made on ancestry.com the terms put that fee at whichever is smaller: twenty-five dollars on a six-month subscription, fifty on a twelve-month one, or simply whatever is left to run.^[2]

Gifts, and plans that cover more than one person

A gift membership behaves differently from Ancestry's other memberships in the way that matters most for money: it does not renew. The Renewal and Cancellation Terms carve gift subscriptions out of automatic renewal explicitly, which means the recipient is never quietly billed at the end and the buyer has no renewal to stop on someone else's behalf.

The buying flow follows from that. Ancestry's gift pages offer the same three tiers in six-month and twelve-month lengths, take the recipient's details and a delivery date, and send the membership by email on the day chosen. The refund rule is tied to that date: a full refund is available before the earlier of thirty days after purchase or the gift start date, and none once that date has passed.

Sharing one subscription instead of buying several. Where a Family Plan is offered, the same terms describe it as a way for the purchaser to grant additional users access to their subscription. The buyer can add and remove people at any time, and anyone on the plan can leave it from their own account settings. The one asymmetry to know about is what happens on cancellation: inside the refund window everyone loses access immediately, while outside it everyone keeps access until the subscription period runs out.
