Account status, eligible category, a cap on the discount and the online-only condition on some codes sit in the card's details and in the deal's Fine Print. Taxes, shipping and service fees stay outside the discount either way, so the number to compare is the amount you will actually be charged.

The costly mistake this month: building a basket around a new-customer code on an account that has already ordered. Both the $15 code and the 20% code are written for new customers, and each adds a condition of its own: a $35 minimum spend on the $15 code and a $50 ceiling on the discount from the 20% one.

This is the part that is easy to miss, and it can be worth more than a coupon. A traditional voucher carries two separate values: the amount you paid, and the promotional value on top of it. Pay $20 for a voucher worth $50 of services and the amount paid is $20, while the promotional value is $30.

Those two values behave completely differently once time passes. The promotional value expires on the date printed on the voucher, unless local law prevents that expiry. The amount you paid does not expire at all, and the merchant is still required to honor the voucher for at least that amount afterward. In practice a voucher you forgot about is rarely worthless: it is usually worth what you paid for it, redeemable against the same experience.

Two more properties follow from the same terms. A voucher cannot be topped up, and a voucher is fully transferable, so passing it to someone who will actually use it is allowed. The promotional value, on the other hand, will not combine with other offers and no part of it covers tax or a tip.
