What kind of discounts does eBay offer?

Here is what eBay discounting really looks like, drawn from 356 promotions tracked over the last two years.

    37%63%
Up to X is a ceiling: the maximum saving you could reach on a qualifying selection, not a cut applied to every item in your cart. Defined discount is a fixed deal you can count on — for example $10 off your order or 20% off a specific product or service, with the amount known up front.
About 37% of eBay promotions are the up to type, while the remaining 63% are defined deals with a set value.

Treat up to deals as a best-case cap, then look at the fine print to see what actually applies to your order.

Two different discounts can apply to the same eBay order, and they do not come from the same source. One is an eBay coupon: take the code from the offers listed above, build your cart, then scroll to the bottom of the checkout page where the Add coupons section sits, select Apply and watch the order total move before you pay. The other is the seller's own discounts, and most of it lands in your cart with nothing typed at all. The two meet in exactly one place: a seller can issue a coded coupon too, and that goes in the same box as an eBay one, where only one coupon or offer per purchase gets through.

This guide was gone over in August 2026 against eBay's published help pages and policies. Where it disagrees with the eBay offers listed higher up, those listings win: they update by themselves, and this text does not.

Where eBay promo codes stand in August 2026

Checked on August 16, 2026. One coupon rule now reads more firmly than the older FAQ page suggested, and it is worth knowing before you accept a code from anyone. eBay's coupon help article states that coupons and discount offers cannot be transferred between eBay accounts, and a coupon showing in your My eBay is tied to that account: it cannot be sold and it cannot be handed on. Codes copied from the offer cards on this page are a different matter: they are published openly, each one carrying its own conditions on the card.

Two weeks into the wind-down of eBay's own gift cards, nothing has changed for money already loaded. eBay confirms that existing cards stay spendable at any time, that only eBay-issued cards are being pulled from sale, and that gift card listings from other companies on the marketplace continue as before. The rule that decides things at checkout is the same one as ever: a coupon and a gift card cannot fund the same order, so a balance and a code are a choice rather than a combination.

The codes running today sit mostly in the 10 to 25% band, with the deeper numbers attached to narrower ground: a sports selection, a buy-three-get-one on men's wear, a luxury selection with a ceiling on how much comes off. Two of them change where you shop rather than what you save, since they only count on orders placed inside the eBay app. Beside those sit a couple of reductions that need nothing typed at all, the cut already being in the listing price.

Measured against the offer cards on this page today: what is running, grouped by what each route asks of you.

    • Broad marketplace coupon codes around 20% off — typed in at checkout — tech, home and back-to-school clothing among the eligible ranges, one of them with no minimum spend — each card above carries its own end date
    • Watches and luxury, 15 to 25% or a flat dollar amount — typed in at checkout — capped by a maximum saving, and in one case opened by a minimum basket — the window sits on the listing rather than here
    • Vehicle parts and accessories, around 10% off — typed in at checkout — narrowed to selected gear, not the whole category — read the timing off the card
    • Sports and fashion reaching the 40 to 60% band — typed in at checkout — some as a straight percentage, one as a buy-three-get-one arrangement — the card states how long it runs
    • Brand-scoped codes around 20% off — typed in at checkout — pinned to The Brand Outlet or to one label's own stock rather than the catalog — end date on the listing above
    • Routes that need no code at all — automatic, or already inside the price — a percentage applied on the listing, plus an app-only pair: a flat amount off a qualifying basket and a small credit on a first in-app purchase — the cards above carry the conditions

Check the scope on the card before you copy anything. On a marketplace the same headline covers two different things: a code eBay runs across a set of eligible items, and a code one seller runs on their own stock. The card tells you which one you are holding and when it ends, and the order total at checkout tells you whether it worked.

The mistake that costs the most here: treating two listings of the same item as interchangeable. Price, shipping, return terms and eligibility for any given offer are set listing by listing, so a code that moved the total on one page can do nothing on the next. Confirm the reduction in the order total before you pay, rather than trusting the price shown in the search results.

Next window worth watching: Labor Day at the start of September is the next fixed point on the US retail calendar, and the back-to-school codes in rotation now are the shorter-dated ones. A marketplace-wide code is not something to count on in advance, so treat early September as a reason to look again rather than as a promise.

Three things worth settling before you buy

eBay's coupon or the seller's coded one?

Both are typed into the same box and only one coupon or offer clears per purchase, so with one of each in hand, you are choosing rather than stacking. Work out the two order totals separately and keep the lower one. The seller's other tools follow different rules and are worth knowing before you decide: eBay documents that a seller's coded coupon can be combined with that seller's sale event and shipping discount, but not with an order discount or volume pricing, and where several discounts sit on one item, the buyer gets the best of them. Either way, the seller never learns which coupon you used, since coupons are converted to currency upon redemption and the seller receives a single payment.

What's the difference between eBay Refurbished and Seller Refurbished?

The two are not grades of the same thing: eBay Refurbished is a program with published rules, and Seller Refurbished is not part of it. eBay's own refurbished program grades items Certified, Excellent, Very Good or Good. Certified carries a two-year warranty, and the other three carry a one-year warranty, both automatically registered at no extra cost, with shipping and returns covered. A listing described as Seller Refurbished is outside that program, so read the badge rather than the word.

Is it worth waiting a few days?

Sometimes, though not for the reason people expect. Add an item to your Watchlist or leave it in your cart, and the seller can send you a personal offer on it depending on the age and format of the listing and on limits around how many offers go out. Where a listing has Make Offer enabled, you can also name a price directly, and the seller is free to accept it, decline it or come back with a counteroffer.

Putting an eBay coupon code through checkout

The coupon field on eBay sits lower down the checkout page than most people think, which is the single most common reason a code is never used. The sequence is short.

    1. Fill the cart first, then select Go to checkout. Almost every offer reads the listing and the total before it decides anything.
    2. Scroll to the bottom of the checkout page to the Add coupons section.
    3. Paste the code in and select Apply. The new order total is what tells you it worked.
    4. If the coupon is already attached to your account, it appears there on its own, and you check the box next to it instead of typing anything.
    5. Only then select Confirm and pay.
The Add coupons field on the eBay checkout page

With two codes in hand and no way to tell which is worth more, there is a quick test: apply the first one, note the order total, then replace it with the second. One coupon or offer clears per purchase in any case, and the total is the only comparison that settles it. Two mechanics decide the rest. If the coupon is worth less than your order, you pay the difference with your usual payment method, which is the ordinary case. If it is worth more, the unused difference is forfeited rather than saved for later.

One coupon per purchase, and what that rules out

eBay is explicit about the limit: you can only use one coupon or offer per purchase. Additionally, a coupon cannot be combined with another coupon, a gift card, a gift certificate, or a voucher, which quietly breaks the common plan of paying with a card balance and topping it up with a code.

Three details follow from that, and they are worth reading before you go hunting for something better. Every coupon has an expiration date, which is printed on the coupon. Coupons and discount offers cannot be transferred between eBay accounts, so one sitting in your My eBay is yours alone: it cannot be sold and it cannot be passed on. And whether you need a registered account at all varies by coupon: its terms set out the eligibility requirements, including whether an account is required.

Returns are easier than most people assume. You are refunded for the entire portion of the purchase you paid for, and a single-item coupon is returned to you as well, although its original expiration date still applies. A coupon that was already close to its end may therefore not survive the round trip, which is worth weighing before you order two sizes with the intention of sending one back.

Why an eBay coupon code gets refused

A code that will not apply is rarely broken. Something in the cart, the listing or the account fails one of its conditions, and the list of candidates is short.

    • It has expired. Every eBay coupon has an expiration date printed on the coupon, not on any page describing it.
    • Something else already has the slot. There is only room for one coupon or offer per purchase, and a coupon cannot be combined with a gift card, gift certificate or voucher.
    • It belongs to a different account. A coupon showing in your My eBay is linked to that account and will not transfer to another.
    • The terms ask for something your order does not have. Eligibility is written into each coupon, from the items it covers to whether a registered account is required at all.
    • You are on the wrong listing. A seller's coupon is valid only at that one store, so the same product offered by someone else falls outside its scope.
    • The code is not quite the code. Stray spaces and swapped characters both count. Read it back once against the card above before deciding it is dead.

What the seller controls, and what eBay controls

This is the part that makes eBay unlike a shop, and it explains most of the confusion around its discounts. eBay sets the coupon rules, buyer protection, and programs. Nearly everything else attached to a listing, the price, the shipping, the return terms and the discounts on offer, belongs to whoever is selling the item.

Sellers on an eBay Store subscription have their own toolkit, and most of what it produces lands in your cart rather than in the coupon box.

    • Sale events. A percentage or a set amount off a chosen group of that seller's listings.
    • Volume pricing. A discount that grows with the quantity you buy from them.
    • Order discounts. Tied to what you spend, including a percentage off a second item and buy-one-get-one arrangements.
    • Shipping discounts. Free or reduced shipping for a period, or under conditions set by the seller.
    • Coded coupons. The exception to the rule: a code the seller creates and shares, which does go in the coupon box.

Two more routes are only open once you show interest in something. Add an item to your Watchlist or leave it sitting in your cart and the seller may send you a discount offer, with eligibility resting on the age and format of the listing and on how many offers that seller can send. Where a listing has Make Offer enabled, you can propose a price outright, and the seller can accept, decline or counter. Both of those need you to be signed in, which is equally true of bidding on an auction.

One consequence of that is worth carrying to checkout. eBay's own guidance to sellers is that where an item has a Best Offer or an offer sent to an interested buyer, the offer takes priority and the coupon cannot be applied. Agreeing on a price first and expecting a code to come off the top of it is the plan that quietly fails.

Watchlist and saved searches in the eBay app

A good share of this happens on the app, where the Watchlist and saved searches travel with you: a saved search emails you when new items match it, and a watched auction-style listing warns you when it is about to end. What eBay's own guide to the app does not document is any code that works exclusively inside it, so treat app-only claims as unconfirmed until one turns up as a dated listing among the offers higher up.

Six ways to pay less on eBay, side by side

Five of these routes belong to eBay or its sellers and one belongs to us. They do not all compete: the coupon slot is single, but a marked-down price and a points balance sit happily beside whatever you type in.

Savings route What it takes Where it shows up
eBay coupon code One code copied from the listings above, and only one per purchase The Add coupons box at checkout
Seller coupon A code created by that one seller The same box, but only on that store's listings
Seller sale, volume or order discount Nothing typed, just a qualifying cart Applied in the cart before checkout
Deals, Brand Outlet, Refurbished Nothing typed Already inside the listing price
Make Offer A signed-in account, on listings that allow it Agreed with the seller before you buy
Discoup points A free Discoup account On top of the route you chose, since the points are ours rather than eBay's

Read the table from the bottom up when the purchase is expensive. On a laptop or a phone, the condition grade and the warranty attached to a refurbished listing usually move the real cost further than any percentage typed into a box, and the code slot is still free for whatever else qualifies.

Deals, Brand Outlet and Refurbished: no code needed

Several routes cut the price without anything typed at checkout, and they are accessible via the navigation at the top of any eBay page. Deals are the rotating selections with the discount already included in the price. Brand Outlet sits alongside it and gathers branded stock at marked-down prices. Both move constantly, which is exactly why the figures worth quoting live on the cards above this text rather than in this paragraph.

eBay daily deals and marked-down selections

eBay Refurbished is the one worth understanding properly, because it is a program with rules rather than a shelf. Items are graded Certified, Excellent, Very Good or Good. Certified comes with a two-year warranty, and the other three with one year. They are registered for you automatically at no extra cost, and returns are free for 30 days, which eBay itself qualifies as subject to certain exceptions. Shipping and returns are covered by the program. The trap is the wording: a listing described as Seller Refurbished is not part of it.

Certified Open Box is the neighboring program for items that were opened but never used, graded on the same logic. And in categories where a fake is the real risk, the Authenticity Guarantee badge means the item goes to an authenticator first, who checks it against the listing before it continues to you; it covers sneakers, handbags, watches, jewelry, streetwear, and trading cards. None of these need a coupon, and none of them are affected by one.

Seasonal events and the eBay discount codes around them

The retail calendar in the United States has fixed points, and a marketplace addresses them differently than a single shop does. Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the Cyber Week that runs around them, the Christmas and Easter stretches, Valentine's Day, Presidents Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, the back-to-school weeks of late summer, Singles' Day in November and the end-of-season clearances at each turn of the year: these are the dates when buyers look hardest for a reduction and when sellers are most likely to be running one.

What actually moves on those dates decides where to look. Most of it is thousands of individual sellers running their own sale events at the same time, which is a reduction inside the listing rather than a code you type anywhere. Deals and Brand Outlet do not change character in a busy week either; they fill up. A marketplace-wide eBay discount code is the rarer of the two, and it belongs to a campaign with a start and an end, rather than to the season itself.

The practical version is short. Nothing in eBay's help pages sets out a promotional calendar you could plan against, and the route eBay does document for receiving codes runs through your communication preferences: opt in to marketing email and codes reach you by email, on eBay's coupon page or in the Account section of My eBay. Meanwhile, a Watchlist entry alerts you when a watched auction is about to end, and a saved search alerts you when new items match it. Neither is a price alarm nor does it replace the dated cards at the top of this page, where a seasonal code stops being an expectation and becomes something you can act on.

Shipping, pickup and returns on a marketplace

Everything in this area belongs to the seller, which is why no honest guide can hand you a number. Shipping is set per listing and shown separately from the price, and the search results carry a Free shipping filter when that is the deciding factor. Once you have bought, a seller cannot raise the shipping cost without your agreement.

Buying several things from one seller changes the arithmetic. Many will send them in a single parcel at a lower cost, and the cart has a Request combined shipping option. It remains the seller's decision, and some things sit outside it, including local pickup items, most items covered by the Authenticity Guarantee, and anything bought through Best Offer. Free local pickup is another option when the seller is close to you: you collect in person and hand over the pickup code, a QR code plus six digits, only after you have looked the item over.

Returns follow the same logic, so read the listing rather than assuming a standard month: the window and the conditions are the seller's, and the listing is where the full return policy is written. Once you open a return, the seller has three business days to respond. Separately, the eBay Money Back Guarantee can step in when an item does not arrive or does not match its description, even when the seller does not accept returns. It applies to purchases paid on eBay.com with an eligible payment method at checkout and carries its own exclusions, so treat it as a backstop rather than a blanket promise.

Points on this page, now that eBay has retired its own

eBay once ran a rewards program called eBay Bucks, and it is worth being plain about its status: eBay discontinued it on April 2, 2024, and it stopped issuing new vouchers then. Being an eBay member is free and genuinely useful, but the benefits of membership are functional: access to full order details and bidding, as well as feedback, messages, My eBay, and the community. None of them is a discount.

What still accumulates on an eBay purchase is Discoup points, because this brand takes part in our points program. They sit alongside whichever route you picked above rather than replacing it: use the code, buy the marked-down refurbished laptop, accept the seller's offer, and the points are counted just the same. The points button on this page confirms that the brand is in.

    Common questions about eBay coupons

Are there any eBay coupons running right now, and how does eBay distribute them?

The live answer sits higher up in the offer listings and updates on its own. On eBay's side, the documented route runs through your communication preferences: update them to receive marketing emails and codes via email, on eBay's coupon page, or in the Account section of My eBay. Codes come and go with campaigns rather than sitting there permanently, so a dated listing beats a promise written into a guide.

Is it possible to stack two eBay coupons?

No. eBay allows one coupon or offer per purchase, and a coupon cannot be combined with another coupon, a gift card, a gift certificate or a voucher. A discount the seller applies in your cart is a separate mechanism that reaches the total through another route, but when it comes to coupons, you are picking one and leaving the other.

What happens to the coupon if I return the item?

You receive a refund for the entire portion of the purchase you paid for. A single-item coupon is returned to you as well, but its original expiration date still applies, so one that was already near the end of its life may not be usable by the time it comes back.

What if the coupon does not cover my whole order?

You pay the remainder with another payment method at checkout, which is the usual case, so nothing to worry about. It does not work in the opposite direction: when the coupon is worth more than the purchase price, the unused difference is forfeited rather than held over for next time.

Do I need an eBay account to buy or use a coupon?

For the coupon, its own terms decide, and they state the eligibility requirements, including whether a registered account is required. For buying, you can check out as a guest on Buy It Now listings under $5,000, paying by card or a digital wallet. Bidding on an auction and making an offer both need an account.

Is there an eBay student discount or a first-order code?

Neither is documented as a standing program on eBay's US help pages, so the honest answer is to look at the live list above rather than count on one. If a campaign of that kind runs, it shows up there as a dated card with its own conditions, and that is the only form of it worth acting on.

Do coupons apply to auctions and Best Offer purchases?

Read the coupon's own terms, since its scope is set there rather than by a general rule. What eBay documents around those two formats is narrower and still useful: both require you to be signed in, and an item bought through Best Offer is not eligible for combined shipping with the rest of your order from that seller.

Can I still buy and use an eBay gift card?

Cards you already hold can be used at any time. What is changing is the supply: eBay has begun gradually phasing out its own digital and physical gift cards, and the dated detail on that is in the block near the top of this page. Listings for other companies' gift cards sold on the marketplace are a separate matter and are unaffected. An eBay gift card does not expire and carries no inactivity or service fee, though its terms cap redemptions at $1,000 a day and $1,500 a calendar month across all accounts linked to you, and it cannot be used on the same purchase as a coupon.
