Below that level the upgrade is a bet on future baskets; above it, the reward simply outgrows the fee. Not everything counts toward it, either: Shop Card purchases, a gift of membership, cell phone contracts sold through third parties and alcohol in a long list of states are all outside the calculation.

Two details trip people up. Purchases made before the upgrade never count, so timing an upgrade just before a large planned purchase matters more than timing it at renewal. And reversing your Executive status wipes out the accumulated reward instead of paying out a partial amount.

Shop Cards, gift cards and tickets

The Costco Shop Card is the quiet workaround for anyone without a membership of their own. Costco states that non-members as well as members may use a Shop Card in any of its locations in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, and online at Costco.com, and that the balance can go toward a membership as well as merchandise. Two limits matter if you plan to lean on it: a Shop Card cannot pay for a same-day delivery order, and it is not redeemable for cash except where the law requires it.

The gift cards and tickets aisle is a separate lever in its own right.
