A Hulu price is set by the route you subscribe through and by who bills the account, and both questions come up before any code field does. Money comes off a Hulu subscription through eligibility rates that are unlocked on their own sign-up pages: the student rate, verified through SheerID and tied to the Disney+, Hulu bundle, and the military rate on Hulu (With Ads), authenticated through The Exchange. Paying for a year of Hulu (With Ads) up front, which Hulu presents as a saving against paying monthly, needs no status at all. For anyone who already subscribes, each of those routes also depends on who bills the account, which is why the billing question gets its own section before the rates. Gift-card credit works on the account balance instead of on the rate, and the selection at the top of this page shows what is running while you decide.

Fall at Hulu: a new price list and the student bundle
Checked in fall 2026. Hulu opened the season with a new price list on its plans and prices page.
The new list applies to subscriptions started from late September and runs across the standalone Hulu plans, the Disney+, Hulu bundles with or without ESPN or HBO Max, and the Hulu + Live TV plans.
The student discount has changed shape as well. Hulu's student page now describes it as the Disney+, Hulu Student Bundle Discount, a discounted rate on the Disney+, Hulu Bundle plan rather than a reduced price on a Hulu plan alone, and it spells out what happens to students who already hold the older offer.
What is changing at Hulu this fall
Is Hulu shutting down now that it lives inside Disney+? No. Hulu and Hulu Premium subscriptions continue to be available, and Hulu says it is being integrated further within Disney+ by the end of the year, with the same content available whether you stream in the Hulu app or inside Disney+. Some Hulu titles cannot yet be watched on Disney+, and Live TV is the stated exception: it cannot yet be streamed inside the Disney+ app, so Live TV subscribers keep using the Hulu app or website.
I already subscribe. When does the new price list reach me? In a billing cycle from late October onward. Hulu's new price list is written for subscriptions started from late September, and anyone who signed up for a Hulu subscription before then is told the change reaches their bill from that point.
Is there still a free trial? Yes, on the Hulu + Live TV, Disney+, and ESPN plan. Hulu's trial page offers it to new subscribers and to returning ones who have not subscribed to Hulu in the past 12 months. That plan is listed with the Live TV plans, apart from the Disney+, Hulu, ESPN bundles, and the bundle page states that none of the bundle plans currently has a free trial. The military offer includes no trial period either.
Who does the billing, and why that decides the rate
The rates and routes described further down keep coming back to the same question, so it gets answered here first. Hulu tells subscribers to open the Account page and read the Payment Information section to see who the billing party is. If the answer is Hulu, the Account page carries the controls: plan switching, add-ons, annual billing, gift-card redemption and the pause.
If the answer is somebody else, those controls move with the money. Hulu names Amazon, Apple, Disney, Google, Kroger, HBO Max, Optimum, Roku, Spotify, T-Mobile, Verizon and Xfinity among the partners that may bill a subscription, and says the plans and add-ons open to you can vary when one of them does. The company is blunt about the way out: a subscriber who no longer wants to be billed through Apple, Google or Amazon can cancel there and sign up directly on Hulu.com.
Hulu states that subscribers paying through a third party other than Amazon or Roku have no option to apply a gift card to the account, and that pausing is unavailable to third-party subscribers with the same two exceptions.
On a Hulu-billed account the plan itself is changed from one screen. Hulu's instructions run through the Your Subscription section: select MANAGE PLAN, where the current plan is highlighted in green, toggle the plan you want from OFF to ON, then open MANAGE ADD-ONS, where a check mark sits beside anything you already subscribe to, use the plus sign to add and turn the check mark into an x to drop one, and confirm with Review Changes.
The student bundle rate and the SheerID check

The student route on Hulu runs through a bundle: the Disney+, Hulu Student Bundle Discount lets eligible college students sign up for the Disney+, Hulu Bundle plan at a discounted rate. It is open to students currently enrolled at a US university or at an accredited post-secondary institution that grants degrees or certificates, provided they meet the verification qualifications, and existing Disney+ or Hulu subscribers qualify only if they are billed directly.
Verification is not done by Hulu. During sign-up Hulu sends students to SheerID to confirm their status, and its student page points questions about student verification, along with redemption errors that come from SheerID, to SheerID rather than to Hulu support.
Hulu's help page lays out the steps. New subscribers start at Hulu.com/student and select CLAIM YOUR DISCOUNT, fill in the Create Your Account fields, get redirected to SheerID to verify, select Continue once the status is verified and then add billing information. Current subscribers start from the same page: CLAIM YOUR DISCOUNT, log in, verify through SheerID, select Continue to review the billing information and finish with Submit.
Hulu allows a plan change at any time but says the student discount applies only to the Disney+, Hulu bundle plan, so moving to a premium plan or to a different bundle drops the discounted price. You can change back to the student bundle while you remain eligible and verified, and eligible add-ons can be attached at any time from the Account page. Students who already hold the older Hulu Student Discount can switch to the bundle version from Hulu.com/student, some after verifying again, and Hulu warns that once you switch out of the Hulu Student Discount you cannot switch back into it.
The military rate through The Exchange
The second verified rate runs through a partner rather than through Hulu's own sign-up flow. Hulu's military discount page describes an exclusive offer made through The Exchange for United States service members, veterans and their dependents, set at 25% off the monthly subscription price of Hulu (With Ads). The page states that pricing is open to new and existing Hulu subscribers billed directly by Hulu who hold a current Exchange membership.
The same page adds that the rate cannot be combined with other promotional pricing and that it applies only to Hulu (With Ads), so switching to Hulu Premium, to a bundle subscription or to a Live TV plan drops the discounted price, much as a switch away from the student bundle does.
The sequence starts on The Exchange site rather than on Hulu. You select Shop Now, sign in to your Exchange account and select Authenticate Now, which hands you across to Hulu to enter an email address, choose a password and add payment details. Hulu states the subscription then renews monthly at 25% off the current retail price until you cancel, and that no free trial period is included in this offer. Authentication errors are handled by The Exchange, not by Hulu.
Paying a year up front, and what that locks
Annual billing asks for a decision rather than a status: there is nothing to verify and no partner to pass through. Hulu's annual billing page limits it to the Hulu (With Ads) plan and points new subscribers to Hulu.com/annual-offer. Current subscribers qualify when they are not billed by a third party such as Roku or Disney+, and make the switch from the Account page.
Timing is where the money moves. A monthly Hulu (With Ads) subscriber who switches is charged straight away. Someone coming down from Hulu Premium or Hulu + Live TV is charged for the annual plan when the current billing cycle ends, because the downgrade takes effect at that point. Anyone mid-trial should note Hulu's warning that switching to annual billing forfeits the remaining trial time and triggers the charge immediately, and the plan then renews on its own one year after the first billing date.
What you give up is flexibility, and Hulu lists it plainly. Once the annual subscription has been charged there is no move back to a monthly plan, annual subscribers cannot switch base plan, an annual subscription cannot be paused, and canceling one produces no refund. Select Premium and Partner Add-ons can still be attached, but they keep their own monthly charge alongside the yearly one. Bundles have no annual option at all, so every bundle plan stays monthly.
Gift cards, credit and the promotional code field
Gift cards work on account balance rather than on price. Hulu sells them through retailers in store and online, and directs both new and current subscribers to Hulu.com/Gift, where you enter the redemption code printed on the back and select REDEEM. That code is 10, 12 or 16 digits depending on the card, so a code that looks the wrong length is not automatically a fake.
New subscribers continue straight into account setup from that screen: email address, password and the Subscriber Agreement, birthdate, plan choice, then AGREE & SUBSCRIBE. Hulu states the account cancels automatically once the full gift-card amount has been used unless another form of payment has been added, either before or after the balance empties.
If you already subscribe, you can also redeem from the Account page. Open the Payment Information section and put the code into the field marked Gift or Promotional Code. Two limits apply there: subscribers billed through a third party other than Amazon or Roku have no option to apply a gift card at all, and buying a Premium Network add-on still requires a United States credit or debit card on the account.
Promotional codes travel differently from gift cards even though they land in the same field. Hulu says a code can be used either to sign up or to apply credit to an existing subscription, that eligibility and redemption steps vary with where the code came from, and that specific codes or credits frequently carry a designated URL you are meant to start from. Reading the instructions that arrived with the code is therefore not a formality on this service, it is the redemption step.
Where each Hulu route lands, and what it rules out
Hulu's help center documents two verified-status rates, one for students and one for the military, alongside annual billing, gift-card credit and the Extra Member add-on. Laid out together, the pattern is easier to see: the military rate and the annual plan land on Hulu (With Ads), the student rate lands on the Disney+, Hulu bundle, and the other two work on the account rather than on the price.
| Route | Where it lands | Who Hulu says qualifies | What it rules out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Student rate | Disney+, Hulu Bundle | Students currently enrolled at an accredited US university or post-secondary institution, verified through SheerID; existing Disney+ or Hulu subscribers only if billed directly | The discounted price does not follow you onto a premium plan or a different bundle, and leaving the older Hulu Student Discount cannot be undone |
| Military rate | Hulu (With Ads) | US service members, veterans and dependents with a current Exchange membership, billed directly by Hulu | Cannot be combined with other promotional pricing, and carries no trial period |
| Annual billing | Hulu (With Ads) | New subscribers, and current subscribers who are not billed by a third party | No return to monthly once charged, no base plan switch, no pause, no refund on cancellation |
| Gift-card credit | Account balance on any eligible plan | Anyone, except subscribers billed by a third party other than Amazon or Roku | Premium Network add-ons still need a US credit or debit card on file |
| Extra Member | Hulu plans and eligible bundle plans | One person aged 18 or over, in the same country as the account holder, with no active Hulu, Disney+ or ESPN subscription | Not sold with Hulu + Live TV plans or with some bundles, the ESPN Unlimited ones among them, and no access to Hulu or ESPN add-ons |

Add-ons sit outside the table and carry their own monthly prices. Hulu attaches HBO Max Basic, HBO Max Standard, Cinemax, Paramount+ with SHOWTIME and STARZ to any plan, keeps the Español, Entertainment, Sports and Unlimited Screens add-ons on Live TV plans only, and reserves ESPN Unlimited for eligible subscribers of the Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max bundle plans. The plan page lists the price of each base plan and add-on, so the total can be worked out before you choose.
Splitting one subscription with an Extra Member
The Extra Member add-on is the sanctioned way to bring somebody outside your household onto the account, and it is a genuine cost lever rather than a discount. Hulu allows one Extra Member per eligible Hulu or bundle subscription. That person has to be at least 18, live in the same country or region as the account holder, and hold no active Hulu, Disney+ or ESPN subscription of their own.
What they get is a full seat rather than a shared login. Hulu describes a unique profile with its own email address and password, streaming and downloading on one device at a time, and the same video and audio quality the account holder sees. What they do not get is any Hulu or ESPN add-on, or any control over the plan, and the add-on itself is not sold on Hulu + Live TV plans or on some bundles, the ESPN Unlimited ones among them.
Setting it up runs through the Account page, like the plan and add-on controls on a Hulu-billed account: log in on Hulu.com, open Profile, then Account, find the Extra Member section under Your Subscription and select Invite. After Continue and Submit, Hulu sends a one-time code to the address on the account, and once that is entered you type in the Extra Member's email address so the invitation goes out.
Ending it takes two separate steps. Removing the person takes effect immediately and leaves the seat empty, but the add-on keeps billing until you remove it as well, and removing the add-on takes effect only at the end of its current monthly billing period. The billing to watch is the account holder's, since Hulu charges the add-on to them and not to the guest.
When a Hulu code will not go through

Hulu publishes its own checklist for a code that will not redeem, and it starts with the link the code is redeemed through.
- The wrong starting link. Hulu notes that specific codes or credits often carry a designated URL or web address you have to use, so a code pasted on a general sign-up page can fail while being perfectly valid.
- Characters that do not match. Hulu's second check is whether the numbers and letters of the code match, which copying settles faster than squinting at the back of a card.
- The wrong subscriber type. A code may be written for new subscribers, for current ones, or for both, and Hulu asks you to check which before assuming the code is dead.
- The wrong plan type. Hulu asks you to check whether the code applies to your plan type, the same kind of limit the verified rates carry: each of them is tied to one plan and does not follow a switch away from it.
- Already redeemed. Hulu lists prior use as a standard reason, and for gift cards adds one more check, whether you are billed by Hulu or by an eligible third party.
One failure has nothing to do with the code at all. Hulu says a subscription cannot be paused while the account is on a promotion, on annual billing, paying with a gift card, on hold, or billed by a third party other than Amazon or Roku. If the option is not offered on your account, those five conditions are the list to run through before contacting support. Where pausing is available, it is set from the Your Subscription section for a duration of up to 12 weeks and starts on the first day of the next billing cycle.
If the problem is location rather than the code: Hulu treats a subscription as intended for members of a single United States household and asks for a payment method issued in the United States at sign-up. Hulu and Hulu Premium can be streamed anywhere in the country, Puerto Rico and US military bases included, while Live TV cannot be streamed in US territories, on military bases or abroad. Hulu also states plainly that the service does not work with anonymizers or proxy services, and one of those running in the background has to be switched off before Hulu will stream.
Hulu discount questions
What do I need in place before Hulu will let me subscribe at all?
Four things, according to Hulu's plans page: you have to be located within the United States, hold a valid form of payment, use a supported device, and have an internet connection with a download speed of at least 3 Mbps.
Is there a fee for leaving?
No. Hulu's plans page states there are no hidden costs, no long-term commitments and no cancellation fees, and that plans and add-ons can be changed at any time. The annual plan is where the route you chose sets its own limits: canceling an annual subscription produces no refund, although a cancellation made outside a free trial leaves access running to the end of the annual billing cycle, and once the annual plan has been charged it cannot be switched to a monthly plan or to another base plan.
Which payment methods does Hulu take, and where does a gift card code fit?
Hulu takes United States credit and debit cards such as American Express, Visa, Mastercard and Discover, plus PayPal, and a Hulu gift card code counts as a way to pay too, redeemed at hulu.com/gift or on the Account page. Hulu adds that a card needs at least a dollar of balance so a temporary authorization hold can go through and confirm the payment information.
If I start watching Hulu inside Disney+, does my viewing history come with me?
Mostly, for profiles that can be linked. Hulu says most unique viewing history and content recommendations carry across for eligible linked profiles, while warning that some Hulu content is not available on Disney+ yet and that the Disney+ Watchlist has a limit on how many titles it holds.
Does a bundle give me one app to log into?
It does not. Hulu says bundle subscribers download each app separately and sign in to all of them with the same email address and password, which is a MyDisney login that also works across other services from the same group of companies.
What happens if I change my plan while a free trial is running?
It may trigger a charge: Hulu warns that making changes to a subscription during a free trial may result in one. The trial page also says you can cancel at any time during the trial to avoid being charged, and that when a trial simply runs out, Hulu charges the current monthly rate of the plan you selected at sign-up, with the subscription renewing from there until you cancel.
Why did a part-month charge appear right after a trial?
Because trial lengths differ between a plan and its add-ons. Hulu explains that when one trial ends before another, or before your next regular billing date, a prorated charge shows up, after which the monthly recurring total settles at the full cost of the plan and add-ons you signed up for.
My plan is not on the price list any more. Have I lost it?
Not automatically. Hulu marks certain plans, among them a legacy bundle and a Live TV plan, as no longer available to purchase or switch into, and says existing subscribers keep them for as long as they neither cancel nor change them. That is a real reason to check before switching plan for a small saving, because the old plan may not be there to switch back to.
