Buying a travel eSIM the night before a flight leaves little room to work out which saving actually applies to the plan sitting in the cart. A promo code, points and a referral credit behave like three separate currencies: one gets typed into a field at checkout, one comes off in dollars once a points balance has built up, and one arrives in the account only after somebody else has bought a plan. All three stop at the same short list of plans, which is the detail that tends to surface at the wrong moment. A percentage row and a flat-amount row stop behaving alike once the exclusions are applied, because a cheap plan can fall below the floor a code needs. That floor, and the rest of the exclusion list, is the same set for codes, points and referral credit, and it is set out below.

Entering a promo code, and the plans it skips

Nomad's help center describes the code going in during checkout, in a field it calls the "Add Promo Code" field, and says that a valid code is then saved to the profile and applied to the order. For the conditions on a code already saved, the help center points to the Promos area of the account, where each saved code opens its own terms. Codes work on the Nomad webstore and in the app, and the same help page notes that an app kept at an older version can leave the promo-code function unavailable.

Two limits on those codes belong on the before side of a purchase. Nomad states that promo codes are generally single-use per account unless a code says otherwise, and that a code cannot be redeemed retroactively for a purchase already made. A code forgotten during checkout is not refunded and is not applied later, unless there was a technical failure at the time; a replacement code is possible as a goodwill gesture, at the company's discretion, and Nomad describes it as a fixed amount.

The exclusion list settles whether any of this applies at all, and it is one list for all three saving routes. The exclusions Nomad publishes include unlimited plans, plans already on sale, plans priced under USD 5 and named region-specific plans, with the Thailand 50GB ten-day plan and the Thailand Unlimited plans given as Nomad's own examples. Points are still earned on those purchases, so an excluded plan is not a wasted one.

Nomad Points and the arithmetic behind them

Nomad's rewards page sets the earning rate at 25 points for every USD 5 spent on a data plan, and the redemption rate at 100 points for USD 1 at checkout. The help center describes the redemption as checking an option it calls "Use Nomad Points", and attaches one condition that holds even when a balance covers a whole plan: a valid payment method is still required, and the charge comes to USD 0 when points cover the full price. Points expire six months after they are earned, which turns them into a reason to book the next trip's data sooner.

Returning customers have a second lever on the same balance. Nomad awards 200 bonus points on a purchase of a plan of 10GB or larger, and at the published redemption rate that is USD 2 off at checkout; the same help article caps the use of bonus points at five times per calendar month. Points stay attached to the account that earned them, and Nomad states plainly that they cannot be transferred to another user.

On stacking, the rewards page answers narrowly and it pays to read it narrowly: points are still earned on a purchase where another promotion was used. That covers earning, not redeeming, and the exclusion list above still decides which plans a redemption can touch.

The referral credit and the order it follows

The referral program pays both sides USD 5, and the sequence decides when. Nomad's referral page states that the invited friend gets USD 5 off their first eSIM plan, and that the person who shared the code receives USD 5 against their next plan once that friend has completed a first transaction. The person invited has to be new to Nomad, and one account can refer up to five friends.

The help center adds a threshold the referral page leaves out: eligibility for the USD 5 referral discount asks for a first purchase of USD 10 or more. Nomad also states that the credit lands in the account under Promos as soon as the friend's first purchase completes, and that it applies automatically at checkout on a next purchase priced USD 5 and above. The referral page says the code itself sits in the account dashboard or the app, under Referral Code.

Two further conditions are set out by Nomad and both are easy to trip over. Referral credits generally do not stack with other promo codes or discounts, unless a specific campaign says they do; and a referral code comes back invalid when the account is not new, when the friend's code has reached its limit of redemptions, or when the app has not been updated. Referral codes are also held to the same exclusion list as promo codes, so a plan on sale or an unlimited plan will not take one.

The free trial eSIM, and what claiming it gives up

New customers are offered a free 1GB trial eSIM, redeemable only inside the Nomad app, with no card details asked for and a list of covered destinations published on the trial page. Taken on its own it is a way to find out whether an eSIM works on a given phone without paying for a plan.

There is a cost attached, and Nomad prints it on that same page: a user who has redeemed a trial eSIM is no longer eligible for other first-time promotions or discounts. The help center explains the mechanism behind that sentence. A trial redemption is treated by the system as a first order, which removes new-customer status, and once the trial is activated it cannot be canceled or undone to restore eligibility.

So the choice arrives before either one is claimed, and for a new account it is genuinely one or the other: a free gigabyte now, or USD 5 off a first paid plan that has to be USD 10 or more. Which of the two comes out ahead depends on the size of that first plan, and it is an easy sum to do before anything is redeemed.

Refunds, and the code that went with the plan

Nomad's refund policy runs on a single question, whether the plan was activated, and on a clock. All refund requests are to be made within 30 days from the date of purchase, and Nomad states that requests made after that window are not considered. An eSIM that has not been installed, or a plan that has not been activated, may be fully refundable once support has checked eligibility. Once the plan is activated it counts as used, and a partial refund for unused data is possible only where usage is small enough not to rule out a service-quality problem, or where a network or technical failure can be verified.

The code used on the plan follows a rule of its own. Nomad states that a discount code used to buy a plan is non-refundable once that plan is installed or activated, and separately that a promo code cannot be reused on a later purchase even when the original plan was refunded. A single-use eSIM removed from the phone before the refund is requested is a dead end too: Nomad says it can then neither refund nor reassign it.

Some plans sit outside that policy entirely, and Nomad names them: UK Voice plans, the Thailand ten-day 50GB plan, the Europe Nomad Pass subscription order and all Unlimited plans are stated to be non-refundable, with the product page carrying the policy for each. Where a refund is due, it can go back to the card that paid or arrive as Nomad Points, and the points version is credited immediately and spendable on the next plan.

What can stop an eSIM from working at all

No discount survives a plan that cannot be installed, so the compatibility check belongs before the code, not after it. Nomad states that compatibility is decided by the device manufacturer and in some cases by the local carrier the phone was bought from, and that a phone tied to a carrier contract may be locked and unable to use an eSIM. Its supported-device page lists the phones, tablets and laptops known to work, and flags a trap for anyone whose handset was bought abroad: iPhones sold in mainland China do not support eSIM, and only some models sold in Hong Kong and Macao do.

The second check is about what the plan does rather than whether it installs. Nomad states that most of its eSIMs are data-only and come with no phone number, which means no ordinary calls and no SMS, and adds that a device may show the line as having no number or an identification-only number that cannot receive verification messages. Calls and texts stay on the home SIM, or move to apps that run over data. The Thailand plan supplied through DTAC is the exception Nomad names, and it does include a number.

Sharing the connection is supported. Nomad states that its eSIMs support tethering, so a laptop or a second phone can run off the same plan, while adding that device type and local network conditions can affect how stable that hotspot is and that it is not guaranteed in every combination.
