Which leaves a clean division. A promo code applies to the merchandise, a delivery benefit applies to the delivery fee, and nothing affects the service fee except changing the order type, since pickup orders have no service fee. Taxes and the tip are yours in every scenario.

• One promotion per order. Instacart names a narrow set of exceptions, delivery-fee promotions and a few selected codes, and closes the door on everything else. Plan for one, not for a stack.
• Percentage coupons can be capped. A percentage discount on a product may have a maximum dollar value, so the savings stop increasing once that limit is reached.

That last line matters: on a Stock Up and Save basket, holding a code back for a different order is usually the better call.

The store you pick changes the answer more than most shoppers expect. Instacart publishes promotion terms for individual chains, so the same code may qualify at one retailer but not another. Ordering from two stores at once splits the order into separate carts, each with its own shoppers, windows, fees and minimums. Instacart+ membership: doing the math before you subscribe

Start from the fact that Instacart states first: you do not need a membership to shop. Instacart+ is optional, sold as a monthly or annual plan, and it starts with a free trial that automatically rolls into the paid plan unless you cancel it. The arithmetic is simple once the marketing is stripped off. The core benefit sets the delivery fee to $0 for grocery and retail orders above a per-retailer minimum, with higher minimums for Costco and restaurant orders. Service fees are charged on every one of those orders anyway. So the honest sum is to count the standard delivery fees you actually paid last month and set that against the plan price.

Then read the exclusions, which are longer than the benefit. Costco has its own threshold; some locations are carved out, prescription medication orders are excluded, pickup orders are excluded, and restaurant orders fulfilled by the outside delivery partner are excluded. Instacart also states in two places that the membership does not give you faster delivery or earlier time slots than anyone else, so there is no priority lane to factor in.

• Bundled subscriptions. The plan includes partner subscriptions delivered on each partner's own platform rather than on Instacart, and one of them is for annual members only.
• Sharing. Family members can be added to share carts and benefits, and business accounts can extend it to a few extra users.
• Eligibility-gated pricing. A reduced rate runs for customers who placed an EBT SNAP order in the previous six months, and Costco members have their own discounted annual price. Both are conditional, so check the requirement before assuming the lower number applies to you.
• Canceling and refunds. Cancellation takes effect from the start of the next billing cycle, with benefits running to the end of the paid period. An annual plan can be refunded only within a few days of the term starting and only if you have not placed an order or activated the bundled subscription, which means switching one of them on closes the refund window.

One clause rarely gets mentioned: Instacart reserves the right to end additional benefits, including the order minimum that unlocks $0 delivery, if a regulation or another issue affects its ability to offer them. Treat that threshold as current practice, not as a guarantee for the length of your subscription.

Paying with EBT SNAP, gift cards and health funds

Instacart accepts several kinds of restricted money, and each one has a rule that trips people up at the wrong moment.

EBT SNAP must be added to the account before you place the order, not during it, and a second card must be on file for the parts SNAP cannot cover: fees, taxes, tips and non-eligible items. A promotion on an order paid partly with SNAP applies only to non-eligible items, and any remaining amount is returned as an account credit. Flexible spending and health savings accounts are supported too, alongside the over-the-counter benefit network.

Gift cards do not expire, and Instacart's terms are unusually clear about it: the loaded value never expires, and no inactivity or service fees eat into it. They can also sit alongside Instacart credits and promo codes in the same order, which makes them one of the few things on the platform that genuinely combine. Two conditions do apply. A credit or debit card must be on the order at checkout, even when the gift card covers the entire total, and a gift card cannot pay for an order that pulls from several retailers at once. What the card covers depends on when it was issued: cards issued on or after November 18, 2020 cover the items, tips, taxes, service fees and delivery fees, while older cards exclude those charges.

Buy now, pay later is offered at checkout through outside providers, so the installment plan, the support and any refund questions belong to them rather than to Instacart; it is not available for prescriptions and cannot be used on an order paid with EBT SNAP. There is also a co-branded credit card issued by a bank partner: 5% back on Instacart purchases up to an annual spending cap, no annual fee, with restaurant orders handled by the delivery partner, Instacart gift cards and purchases made directly with retailers left out. It is a credit product whose full terms are held by the issuing bank rather than on Instacart's site, and it deserves the same scrutiny you would give any other card.

After the order: refunds, cancellations and credits

You have three days from pickup or delivery to report a problem yourself, through the app or the website, and reporting within the first day is what makes a same-day refund possible. Missing, wrong, spoiled and poorly replaced items follow the same process as late or undelivered orders, settled as a credit or a refund up to what you paid. Not every report qualifies automatically; restaurant orders are handled outside this process, and orders paid with EBT SNAP are refunded rather than credited.

Canceling is free for longer than most people think, but the cut-off is earlier than the one usually quoted. The order can be canceled at no cost until a shopper accepts it, which happens before any shopping begins; after that acceptance, a $15 cancellation fee can be charged. If the shopping has not started, rescheduling is free and can be pushed out by up to seven days from the original delivery date, which is often the better move, though any difference in delivery fees can still be added.

Returns are where the marketplace structure shows through. There is no Instacart returns desk because Instacart is not the seller: the return policy belongs to the retailer that supplied the goods and varies from chain to chain, while higher-value items and those delivered with certified handling go back to the store itself, with the digital receipt as proof of purchase.
