Where a button reads Get sale instead, there is no string at all: the reduction already sits in the listed price, or it is released by a program you belong to. Terms and closing dates are printed on the individual cards above, and where a card and this note disagree, the card is what holds.

Two seasons are running side by side up there, and they do not carry the same urgency. The fall cards name their goods: an up to 40% band on optics, crossbows and hunting apparel that the card itself calls last chance, an up to 40% hunting event where the card states the prices already reflect the saving, and an up to 30% Start Fall Sale. Next to them the Labor Day cards are still posted at up to 50% off on fishing, camping, optics, clothing and footwear, with dates that run well past the holiday itself: what a card prints about its own end date is what holds, not the name it carries.

The pattern behind the dates: the list below opens with a card that closes on October 1 and ends with the one that carries a promotion code, dated October 17; in between, three cards share October 14 and a fourth runs to October 15. The route matters more than the number. A department event reaches only the products it names, clearance is priced item by item rather than as a percentage off your cart, and a status discount, the kind set out further down this page, does nothing at all until the verification behind it has cleared. What settles the day is what the discounted merchandise actually comes to, not which percentage shouted loudest on the way in.

The trap in this deck: CLUB card and points offers sit among the cards above, and a points offer is not a price cut. The card that promises $20 in CLUB Points after five purchases on the Mastercard, inside thirty days of approval, leaves today's total exactly where it was: it pays out later, on a different order, and only once the spending behind it has been done. If the goal is a smaller number at the bottom of this order, the routes that do that are the sale price, the clearance aisle, the eligibility discount and a card that carries a promotion code.

What changes next: the October 1 card is the first of the six to roll off, and the one carrying a promotion code runs to October 17, so both of those are decisions with a clock on them. Sale price or clearance? They behave differently after the sale. A Fall Hunting Classic price is a temporary reduction on current stock, so the same item is likely to still be there next month at its usual price. Bargain Cave is the opposite: it is the end of a run, the size or the color you want may not come back, and an item bought from that aisle inside a store cannot be returned at all. Which savings reach your cart, and how

Cabela's runs several discount routes at once and they do not stack in any obvious way, because most of them never touch the promotion field. This is the short map of what each one is, what you have to do for it and where it lands on the bill.

Two lines of that table are worth reading twice. Points and rebates do not reduce what you hand over today, so comparing them against a percentage on the same cart flatters them badly. And the promotion field is the only row where anything gets typed, which is why a page like this one carries far more sale cards than code cards for this retailer.

Where a Cabela's promo code goes at checkout

Cabela's publishes the path itself, and it is not the cart page where most people look for it. The field lives one step further on. In the Payment & Billing section of the online checkout there is an option to Enter a Promotion Code; selecting it reveals a text field, and the Enter button next to that field applies the promotion to the order. If the total does not move, nothing has been applied, whatever the field itself appears to say.

Two other channels take the same code by a different means. On a phone order you give the promotion code to the Outfitter handling the call, and on a mail or fax order you write it onto the order form before sending it. There is no separate online form for it and no minimum you can assume: the promotion decides that, not the checkout.

On the cards at the top of this page, the two buttons mean two different things. Get code belongs to a card that has an actual string behind it, which you copy and then paste into the promotion field described above. Get sale belongs to a card with no string at all, and it takes you straight to the reduced prices or to the page where the offer applies by itself. Hunting for a string to type after opening a Get sale card wastes more minutes than anything else people do on a page like this.

One field at that step is easy to confuse with the promotion box. If you hold a CLUB Mastercard, the Redeem Points field on the payment or review order page is a different mechanism entirely: it takes the card added to your shopping account and lets you apply a points balance to the amount due. It will never accept a promotion code, and the promotion field will never accept a points balance.

Why a Cabela's discount code gets turned down

Cabela's names three causes in its own troubleshooting, and they are worth working through in that order before assuming the code is dead. The first is simple entry: a wrong character or a stray space is enough, so re-type rather than re-paste. The second is the expiration date on the promotion, which is the single most common reason a code found somewhere older stops working. The third is eligibility, which is the check people skip: a promotion can name a minimum order amount or restrict itself to a particular category, in which case a cart that misses either condition will be refused with no explanation on screen.

There is a fourth reason that sits outside the code itself. Cabela's states in its pricing policy that prices and promotions are subject to change and will sometimes differ between the website, the catalog and the stores, and that it does not issue rain checks. • Seasonal events. The Fall Hunting Classic is the one running as this guide is written, and Cabela's promotes it across the top of its own site. Events like it are announced on the retailer's own offers page, which is the primary source for anything currently live.
• Free shipping. Applied automatically on qualifying orders once the merchandise total clears the published line, with ship to store free of charge and free of any minimum. Neither one asks for a code.
• Mail-in rebates. When a product carries one, the item image on its page carries a blue rebate form icon at the upper right; selecting it opens the form in a separate window for printing, and a PDF reader is required. Rebate forms do not ship with every product, so printing one is often the only way to get it.
• Text alerts. Cabela's runs its own text alert program to announce new products, large sale events and current deals. It is a notification channel rather than a discount in itself, which is the honest way to describe it.

The practical consequence for an outdoors cart is that timing beats searching. A rifle scope or a set of waders is far more likely to be reduced by an event or by the clearance aisle than by anything typed at the end, and both of those are visible on the product page before you ever reach checkout.

Legendary Salute: military and first responder rates

Legendary Salute is Cabela's standing discount program, and it is the closest thing this retailer has to a permanent percentage off. It runs at two rates: 5% on firearms and ammunition, and 10% on all other eligible merchandise. Exclusions apply, and the program page is where the current list of them is published.

Eligibility covers verified military personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and fish and wildlife agents. How you claim it depends on where you are buying:

• In a store. Show a current ID that verifies military status or current employment as an LEO, firefighter, EMT or fish and wildlife agent.
• Online or by phone. Military members, LEOs, firefighters and EMTs confirm eligibility online first. That means creating an account in the online store, signing in to it and submitting the verification information; the discount then applies to the purchase.
• One exception. Wildlife agents cannot currently be verified online. For them the discount is applied on a retail purchase instead.

Because the discount is released against a verified account rather than as a public string, no string ever enters the promotion field, and none exists to be found on a third-party page. Outdoor Rewards points and the CLUB Mastercard

Two separate points programs run at Cabela's, and mixing them up is the reason a lot of people conclude they need a credit card to earn anything here. They do not.

Outdoor Rewards is the free one. Points accumulate on purchases whether they are made on the website, through the catalog or in a retail store, and they are redeemed for merchandise. The rate is published: one point for every $1 spent on merchandise or gift cards, with each point worth two cents when redeemed. A $100 purchase therefore returns 100 points, which is $2.00 toward a future order. To earn them online you enter your Outdoor Rewards card number during checkout; on a phone order you give the number to the Outfitter, and in a store you present the card at the register.

Several categories are excluded from earning: food and beverage purchases, store restaurants, lodge transactions, vendor-operated transactions, gift cards, taxidermy, and marine and off-road products including ATVs. Points also stop earning on any part of a purchase paid with redeemed points or with a gift card, since that amount comes off the eligible total.

The CLUB Mastercard is the credit one, and it earns CLUB Points on purchases placed on the card. It is tiered by annual spending: Classic cardholders earn 2% back in CLUB Points, Silver 3% and Black 5%, on purchases at Cabela's stores and website and at the retailer's affiliated lodges, restaurants and outdoor destinations. Everywhere else, any tier earns 1%. CLUB Points redeem for gear, and also for stays, dining and booked trips through the affiliated properties. The published terms state that CLUB Points do not expire, and the program page adds that the card carries no annual fee and no minimum before you can redeem.

Redeeming those points online has its own path. You have to be signed in to your shopping account with the CLUB card added to it. Then, on the payment or review order page, you expand the Redeem Points field, add the card, and the available balance appears under Redeem CLUB points, where you enter the amount to use and apply it. Points from either program also count as an accepted method of payment at checkout, alongside cards and gift cards.

One more member benefit pays a CLUB member more than it pays anyone else, and the terms are published in full on the Low Price Guarantee page rather than in the help center. Cabela’s will match a lower price on an identical product (same brand, model, color, size and quantity, in stock on both sides) offered either by a retailer within 100 miles of your local store or on a qualifying website. For CLUB members the guarantee goes further: Cabela’s does not just match that price, it beats it by 5%. The match is applied at the time of purchase and has to be asked for, which is the part most people miss: it is a request, not something the cart works out on its own.

Shipping, the $50 line and ship to store

Free standard delivery on orders over $50 is the standing offer at Cabela's, promoted in the site header rather than as a limited promotion, and it needs no code. Below that line, delivery is charged on a published rate chart that rises with speed, and above it the faster tiers change as well; the current figures sit on Cabela's shipping charges page, which is the only place they are guaranteed to be current. Rates differ again for Alaska and Hawaii, US territories and APO or FPO addresses, and for Canada.

Ship to store is the other free route, and it carries no minimum at all. If there is a Cabela's within reach, sending the order to the store rather than to your door removes the delivery charge from a small order entirely, which is the difference between a $30 cart costing $30 and costing more than that.

A few surcharges sit outside the rate chart and catch outdoors carts more than most:

• Hazardous materials. Items classed as hazardous, such as black powder and its accessories and reloading supplies, can carry a hazardous material upcharge and require a signature on delivery. Hazardous merchandise cannot be expedited or shipped internationally.
• Oversized or overweight items. Extra charges apply on some products because of size, weight or the quantity ordered. Cabela's flags these under the red Important Notice on the product page, and they also appear in the order total at checkout.
• Signature on delivery. Required on orders above $1,000, and on orders containing hazardous items.
• Address limits. Expedited options require a physical address and are not available to P.O. boxes. Gift cards ship free when sent standard.

The order of operations matters if you are chasing the free line. Shipping charges are calculated on the merchandise total, so a surcharge on an oversized item does not help you reach the threshold, and neither does the delivery charge itself.

Returns, exclusions and how you can pay

Cabela's return window on catalog and online purchases is 60 days from purchase with valid proof of purchase, by mail or at a store, with your choice of an exchange or a refund. Past 60 days, returns are accepted on an inspection basis only. Without a receipt, the item is processed at the lowest sale price plus applicable tax and comes back as an exchange or as merchandise credit on a gift card, and a valid government photo ID may be requested.

A number of categories sit outside that window, and several of them are exactly what an outdoors order contains:

• Not returnable for safety reasons: firearms, ammunition, black powder firearms, black powder, primers, reloading lead, brass or bullets, treestands, blowguns and mouth calls. If one of these arrives damaged or defective, customer service handles it directly instead.
• Bargain Cave bought in a store is nonreturnable, which is the practical cost of the cheapest route on this page.
• Gasoline-powered items and drones cannot be returned once used or once fuel or oil has been added; unused, they follow the 60-day rule in original packaging with the manuals and accessories.
• Custom-order, altered and reconditioned products go back to the manufacturer rather than to the retailer, and installed marine propellers are nonreturnable.

On payment, Cabela's accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, Diners Club, JCB and UnionPay, plus its own gift cards, prepaid gift and incentive cards, and CLUB or Outdoor Rewards points. PayPal is not available on cabelas.com, and neither is a payment plan on orders placed there. A personal check or money order is accepted only on a mail order.

Offers that are not Cabela's

Cabela's has published a warning about fraudulent social media advertising that uses its brand, and it is unusually specific about the shapes it takes. Three keep recurring: posts claiming the retailer has lost the right to sell a named brand of crossbow, optic or scope and is dumping the stock; anniversary sale posts advertising everything at 90% off; and posts showing a supposed chief executive announcing a free giveaway. None of them are genuine, and the company states plainly that it will not honor price match requests originating from those ads.

The rule that follows from it is easy to apply on a page like this one. A real Cabela's offer is visible on cabelas.com, either as a reduced price on the product or as a promotion the checkout recognizes. An offer that exists only inside a social post, with a link that goes somewhere else to collect payment, is the pattern the retailer is describing.
