How to make the most of Back to School sales
Term starts in a matter of days for most of the UK, and the shopping list is probably down to a handful of stragglers by now.
Rather than chasing every remaining discount, it's worth being selective about what still deserves your attention this week, and what's better handled once the first day has actually come and gone.
Combine before you compare
At this stage of the sale, the biggest saving usually isn't a bigger discount, it's stacking what's already available: a store's own multi-buy offer on stationery and backpacks, a loyalty scheme, and a voucher on top, applied in the right order so nothing gets excluded at checkout. The Back to School offers page is a quicker way to see which stores currently have something live than checking each retailer one by one, which matters more now than it did a few weeks ago, since offers are changing fast in this final stretch.
Basics first, everything else on its own timeline
Everyday items such as exercise books, pens and lunch boxes are usually the easiest wins right now: shops are actively clearing them to make space for autumn stock, and buying a week early costs nothing since they don't go out of date or out of size.
School uniforms sit at the other end of the scale. Because sizes run out rather than get marked down, waiting for a better price on uniform pieces is rarely worth the risk of the size you need selling out first.
Why sports kit and PE gear follow their own rules
Football boots, trainers and PE kits tend to behave differently again. Popular sizes and models can disappear from shelves well before the wider Back to School sale winds down, since demand for sport-specific items doesn't drop off once term starts the way demand for general stationery does. If a particular size or style has already gone, it's often more useful to check what else is currently available than to keep waiting for it to reappear at a lower price.
A quick habit that pays off more than hunting for discounts
Before adding anything else to the basket, it's worth a quick check of what's already in a drawer at home. Late-season shopping is when families most often end up with a second pencil case or a spare set of exercise books simply bought to feel prepared, rather than because anything was actually missing. That one habit, checking what you already have before checking what's on sale, tends to save more than any single discount does at this point in the season.
